Your legs can be your best accessory.
Forget layering on the shimmering jewelry, scarves, or hats — you can make a statement simply with what you wear on your legs.
At the beginning of fall retailers start to set out the season’s collection of tights. Each retailer has a different take on what prints and colors are fashionable, some experiment with metallics and embellishments while others keep it classic in geometric patterns.
I have amassed a collection of around 30 different pairs of patterned tights from my shopping over the last two years. Most of them come from The Limited because I work there part-time and because they always sell great, high quality tights.
One thing I know for sure is that you really can never have enough options. Different designers create different looks so it is worth looking around to really explore what is out there. If your taste is refined or funky there is something out there for you.
These are a pair of truly unique tights. I wore them today with an all black look and minimal jewelry. These gold floral lurex tights from The Limited are a true statement piece and you have to be confident and conscious to pull it off. When your legs are covered in a gold print you want to keep it very simple with everything else; I wore these with a black mini, black sweater and small gold drop earrings. Let them shine by turning down the volume on the rest of your outfit.
If you are going for a subtly sexy look try these cheap black French back seam tights from Gipsy. The tights themselves are a very versatile black sheer with just the added exposed seam in the back. This look can be worn with a killer dress and heels or with boots and a mini skirt.
On to another pair from my own collection. These leopard printed tights from New York & Company are perfect if you are looking to add a little animal print into your outfit (they look much better in a larger image). They are simple enough to wear with a pop of color but muted enough they won’t take the attention away from you.
Since we all wear Spanx under our clothes anyway you might as well shop tights made by the brand! My favorite print is a simple polka dot. I have many pairs with dots of many sizes. I love these because they are unique enough to add a little fun to your outfit but not crazy so they still look classic. These are perfect, and appropriate, to wear to work with a cute pencil skirt and heels.
If you are going for quirky you should check out these “alphabetights” from House of Holland. This look is not for everyone but is a unique departure from the traditional printed tight with your legs literally spelling out your look.
Another unique look is these fire net tights from Wolford. I have seen a million different designs but these are the best fire-inspired tights I have come across. The print is bold but when done in black sheer it is muted enough to be almost geometric inspired. I have seen fire tights done in colors but that always looks tacky.
Don’t be afraid to try and add some color! These opaque tights from The Limited are great quality and come in a dozen different colors to mix and match with your wardrobe. I have these in blue, burgundy, purple and mustard yellow and I get a lot of mileage out of them. The blue looks great with an all blue colorblock outfit with several different shades. Don’t be afraid of contrast either! Pair some blue tights with a burgundy sweater and you have another great look.
My advice is to head to your favorite retailer and check out their selection and decide how much sparkle and pattern you are comfortable with. Many designers go crazy with bold looks but they always have muted, simple looks that work in everyone’s life like a simple argyle or houndstooth.
