In my last post I talked about some of the higher-end liquid lipstick on the market (other than Colourpop which is actually the least expensive). In this post I tried out two brand new drugstore formulas that are hoping to jump on the liquid-to-matte bandwagon.
The two I bought and will review have literally just come out and piqued my interest enormously. The liquid-to-matte lipstick world is huge at the moment with high end brands unveiling lines (MAC coming soon) and a slew of niche brands that have amazing colors. So it stands to reason your Revlons and Maybellines of the world would follow suit with their own efforts.
The Maybelline packaging is pretty cool in a rectangular bottle with long sponge applicator. The scent of the product isn’t very good and the consistency is more fluffy than liquid but the color is nice and it goes on very smooth. I don’t quite understand how it is considered matte since I’ve had it drying for 10 minutes and it is still pretty glossy. It only got CLOSE to matte after I blotted it a bunch. I would give this a 4/10. $7.99
The Revlon product is a little better. The formula smells very good, like candy or fruit so that’s a plus. The formula is fluffy but not as fluffy as the Maybelline. The color is overall richer and goes on nicely. But once again after 10 minutes of drying the product is still very glossy, perhaps more glossy than the Maybelline product. This one gets a 5/10. $8.99
Overall neither gives you that matte finish you really want and neither are particularly long-wear. If you are looking for cheap matte colors I would just go over to Colourpop where each are only $6 and you get a $5 coupon code off of your first order.
