Looking for a holiday look that you can wear throughout the year? Then go for the classic and timeless little black dress.
The little black dress is a wardrobe staple that can be dressed up, or down, for any occasion. It looks great on Christmas, New Years, or a night out during any season.
The best part about a little black dress is that it isn’t a trend, it’s always in style and can be made trendy with accessories. Sleeves, short, v-neck, strapless, a-line, fitted, drop waist–it is all up to you and what looks best on your body.
Though the options are endless here are a few of my favorite simple LBDs.
Let’s start off with the most basic type of LBD, the sheath dress. This basic black sheath dress from The Limited is a great piece for any occasion. This dress looks great on its own with killer heels and sparkling jewelry for a night out or under a jacket for a wear to work look. The simple construction makes this piece easy to change from one season to another and through changing trends; you just have to update the accessories.
You can also try a LBD in a longer sleeve and more flexible fabric. This black wrap dress from Banana Republic is a great example. The dress has a figure flattering a-line skirt with a synched, tie waist. The spandex infused fabric also makes it super comfortable without making it look casual.
Another simple look is the basic black strapless dress. This look from Bb Dakota is a great simple shape. When wearing a strapless or low cut dress make sure your hem isn’t crazy short. If you are already showing off your arms and back there is no need to show a ton of leg, it looks cheap. This hem is right above knee (on a normal person) which is a great length.
A LBD with a little lace is always super chic. This look from Oasis features a great sweetheart neckline with lace overlay. The back also features the lace detail with a button back closure. This look combines classic construction with some great feminine details that are not too overpowering and can still be accessorized with virtually anything.
Another lace detail look I love is this dress by Rebecca Taylor. This ponte jersey dress looks super comfortable and is super flattering with the light ruffle of the paper-bag waist. The fitted bodice is both sexy and chic with the low cut neck with lace detail on the front and back.
A look I would totally rock myself is this Bb Dakota Jada dress. This dress is made of a mid weight jersey with stretch so it comfortably fits your shape. The mesh panels at the neck are chic and unique. I also love the 3/4 length sleeves, great for this time of year.
You don’t have to stick to a typical dress fabric with your LBD. This dress from Oasis is a great example of how to wear a faux-leather look in a classic shape. This high neck skater dress has great versatility with it’s clean lines and cutout back.
This post is only the tip of the LBD iceberg. The only rule with the little black dress is that it’s black and shorter. Play with details but if you want something truly timeless go for a classic shape with minimal details and sparkle. The key is getting a dress that fits great and can be changed through the season with bold accessories based on the occasion.
