If you are going for a floral look this spring you better be ready to go bold.
This season dainty floral prints are out and bold, colorful, and dramatic prints are hitting the racks. We saw some great examples of the bold style in a range of Spring 2013 RTW collections by Moschino, Preen, Ralph Lauren, and Rebecca Minkoff. We also saw some more modern, refined florals in collections by Valentino and Rochas that were more dark and dramatic than fun and flirty.
This trend doesn’t just apply to dresses but pants, accessories, and even bold printed shoes– which I am loving!
Here are some modern floral pieces I love and know you will too!
One of my favorite floral prints this season is from The Limited and can be found on just about every type of piece imaginable. This graphic green and blue print is classic and clean. I love this look because it screams spring without looking like it exploded out of the 60s. This is a very mature print and would look great in a work setting with a navy top or blazer and some great pumps. Floral prints can san often look too summery but with the cool tones this one is definitely all about spring.
Bold floral blazers are also great for the season. I love this floral cutaway blazer by Aqua because of its great print and use of colors. If you really want to work the trend pair this with the matching bottm, like pictured, but if not this looks great with a pair of white jeans or black skinnies. This isn’t like a boxy Hawaiian shirt, this allover print works because the piece is fitted and has a modern cut. Cut is key to rocking any bold print.
Bold floral prints also make great leggings! These are by Lysse Leggings sold at Bloomingdales. This pair is a great example of a black based floral print. It is both bold and colorful but a little more subdued because the space between flowers is filled with black instead of another color, or more flowers. I love these because they can really work with a lot of other colors. I especially love them with the nude pumps like in the photo. This is your statement piece, the rest of your look should work to compliment, but not out shine these leggings.
One piece I am obsessed with is this long-sleeve dress by Alice + Olivia. This look represents the brighter side of the floral trend (more Mochino, less Rochas). I love this look because the dress is a simple, fitted crew-neck, long-sleeve dress with exposed zipper. The classic shape lends perfectly to the bright, fun print. This is the perfect day dress and will really bring spring with you wherever you go! This looks great with minimal accessories but I wouldn’t mind seeing a bright pair of pumps pulling out one of the colors of the print.
Alice + Olivia has some FANTASTIC pieces for spring including this great yellow iris print. I love this print because of its consistency throughout the piece. It is more of a take on realism than other floral looks (like the dress above it). This also comes in a great pair of skinny jeans and a beautiful dress with flirt ruffles perfect for any spring event.
Florals also look great on top! I love this floral peplum by Eight Sixty. This has a great tropical print with a high neck and sexy v-back. This is the perfect top to pair with a solid, fitted bottom. Since the colors are so tropical this one might be best for the end of spring headed into summer. It seems a little wrong wearing such a bright print when there is still snow on the ground!
Florals also look great on everyday accessories like these wayfarer sunglasses by Betsey Johnson. The wayfarer shape is something you can never go wrong with. I love a classic black rim but these floral glasses are super chic and a great way to update a classic look for the season.
Wearing floral on your feet can be a little difficult but is worth the search! Finding the right floral printed shoes for you is a little tough because they aren’t everywhere and every print and shape fits a different personality. Personally I love these ‘Camden’ pumps by Matiko. I am all about the wedge with ankle strap this season and the rose print is perfect and subdued. If you want something a little brighter check out Ann Taylor or The Limited for some bright pumps and flats. You are bound to fall in love with a pair!
Florals are going to be everywhere this season! Another great way to wear a floral print is with another, contrasting print like a gingham or simple bold stripe. When combining the prints be conscious of the colors. The geometric print should complement the floral or stick with a basic black and white. Also try this with polka dots, especially with a bold dot top and floral bottom. You have to mix and match to find what you like best. Merchants like Target have great examples of combining the prints in stores and online.
