If you have ever seen me in person you know that 99 percent of the time I am carrying a ridiculously large bag.
The bigger, the better. Big bags are a great way to accessorize a look and a practical way to carry around all the junk you think is a necessity.
As a journalist I always have a bunch of stuff I need to have with me at all times; notebook, video camera, two dozen pens, audio recorder, etc. So for me, a big bag is a must. But even when I am not working and traveling light I still love the look of an oversized bag.
Even if you normally carry a smaller bag there is always a time when you need a bigger bag, like when traveling, going out straight from work, or when you are out shopping.
Here are a few examples…
First one is a bag that I actually own and worship. This black full studded holdall by River Island is the perfect bag for a day trip or covering an event that requires a lot of equipment. The bag’s construction is chic and simple with the allover studs giving it some killer edge. You won’t have to worry about getting mugged, with a little weight this bag could definitely be a weapon.
A classic tote is also a great piece to have. This ‘For Always Tote’ by Henri Bendel is beautiful. The deep red color with gold hardware is a great combination and super versatile. This piece is beautifully made of embossed leather with a sleek satin lining with space for your smart phone. This is both modern and classic.
One of my favorite shapes is the classic barrel bag. This one by Clava is a great example of a simple bag. The sturdy construction of purple leather with buckle details makes this piece a great addition to a million different outfits.
Another way to go is with the classic tote. This bag from Marc by Marc Jacobs is simple and adorable with its playful polka dot design. This tote is super roomy and features a zipper closure. Though Marc Jacobs may scream expensive the bag is a moderate $228, not a cheap buy but not too outrageous either.
Another great tote is this color block bag by Tinley Road. The bag features a textured brown handle and sides with a great dark olive center. The colors play off each other well and the lack of detail makes the color block and texture differences really break through.
If you are looking for something a little softer and more casual try out this weekender by Accessorize. The gray base color with colorful spots is a great whimsical pattern. The caramel faux-leather detail complements the pattern perfectly.
Never under estimate the power of a bright color. This leather tote by Henri Bendel is a great way to add a big splash of color to your outfit. The simple construction with black and classic Henri Bendel stripes really brings the color to life by contrast. One of my favorite parts is the lining, a classic Bendel black and white striped pattern.
Big bags are big fashion. When you are shopping for one take into account quality and style. Some of the bags in this post hover around $200, which may seem like a lot. But the key to finding a great bag is finding one that is constructed well and will last a while and usually you can’t find that for $30. Also remember your proportions. Some bags are just simply too big. If you have a very small frame always look at yourself in the mirror holding the bag, you may find that it looks bigger than you.
