Bold geometric prints in classic black & white and bold colors are super on trend for 2013.
This trend includes color block, classic bold stripes, and one of my favorites– polka dots.
Polka dots are a classic print that bring a little whimsy to every look. But don’t feel like you have to stay within the traditional baby-doll dress and a-line skirt look, grab a pair of polka dot ankle pants or better yet, a great exaggerated blouse!
Polka dots not only add whimsy but a retro feel when you rock some throwback looks from the 50s and 6os like cat eye sunglasses and full skirts.
The ways to wear the trend are endless. You can go for a subtle small dot allover print for work or go for it in an exaggerated, over-sized print in a bold color. Adding it to an existing outfit can be super easy with spotted jewelry and my favorite, a great polka dot scarf!
Here are a few of my favorite pieces to get you started.
I absolutely love polka dots in classic shapes. This flounce skirt from White House Black Market is a simple yet feminine piece to add to your work collection this winter. This is a piece that can transcend trends because of its simple shape and subtle print. This would look great with a black or colorful jacket or a pair of bold pumps! This skirt is quiet enough to be an accessory to another statement piece, kind of like a simple pinstripe.
Here is a dress that I wear all the time. This simple polka dot slinky dress from Dorothy Perkins is super comfortable and versatile! This is a piece I wear all the time in both casual and work settings. The simple shape begs to be accessorized! I love pairing it with a bold red belt or a great colorful chunky necklace. It looks great with black tights and bare legs so transitioning to spring is a snap!
A great use of polka dots is in a slim fitting pant. In just about every store I have visited recently I have found a pair of ankle pants or skinnies covered in polka dots. These leggings from Forever 21 are a great (and affordable) example of that trend. The key to wearing the trend on your bottom half is to go for a fitted look. While polka dots make great full skirts they don’t make great wide-leg pants, or even flared pants for that matter. If there is too much fabric you run the risk of looking like a clown. Go for a skinny fit or a slim fit, cut right at the ankle!
Polka dots look great on a variety of tops. If you want to go big try this oversized dot sweater from INC at Macy’s. This sweater is bold but not crazy. The simple shape with classic crew neck balances the oversized spots out perfectly. A sweater like this is a great addition to your wardrobe in a number of colors. Try this look in a bold color with white dots!
Have an event to attend but don’t want to look like a 50s housewife? Try this modern dress by BCNGeneration. You generally see polka dot dresses in a lot of classic shapes, like sheath dresses, which can give them a retro feel. If you are sick of the throwback look and are looking for something more modern go for a dress like this one with the uneven dots, single shoulder strap, and pockets!
Here is another piece I own and love (though I don’t wear it with shorts). This simple sheer blouse from Forever 21 looks great on its own and under a simple sweater. I bought this shirt because it looks especially great tucked into a simple black pencil skirt with a thick colorful belt! I wear this with a mint green belt (my last trend post) and some cute ankle strap pumps! This blouse is a great basic that’s really not so basic.
I will explore the trend in a later post but so you know for now, platform wedges are hot! Especially ones with ankle straps. These polka dot wedges from Forever 21 hit both trends on the nose. These would look great with a bold skinny pant (like a pair of bright ankle pants from The Limited), or a short fun dress in any color! When you wear an ankle strap you have to make sure you can see it so make sure your pants are tailored to perfection.
Though there are probably thousands of polka dot scarves there I am going to settle on this mixed print scarf from White House Black Market. I like this look because it is a little different. It has the classic square shape and black and white print but also includes a touch of leopard. The mixed prints is fab and very wearable because it is printed in all neutrals.
If you are going to accessorize you might as well dress up your most used accessory. I currently have an iPhone case like this (though inverted and from The Limited months ago) and I love it. If you are going to be on trend you phone better be too!
I am fighting every instinct in my body right now to keep my credit card in my wallet and not buy these fab shoes. These Kate Spade New York pumps are super chic. I love them because they are so simple and would go with everything. I am also a sucker for a pointy toe pump!
I was GOING to post my favorite Sally Hansen Salon Effects but apparently they decided to discontinue the adorable black and white version! No worries, I am sure this pink polka dot variation is just as cute! Of all the nail art products I have tried the Sally Hansen Salon Effects remain the best, just be sure to put a top coat over it when you are done!
I will end this post as it crosses the 1,000 word threshold. For more and more great looks visit my Shopcade!
